About
The Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy Department is established to look after the Medical Systems such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga & Naturopathy and Homoeopathy.
Objective
The Department is functioning with the following aims and objectives
- Providing Health service to the Public through Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy.
- Providing and monitoring education and Research activities in Indian systems of Medicine.
- Promoting the growth of Medicinal Plants.
- Encouraging projects involving women and small scale industries in the preparation and marketing of home remedies and herbal food preparations.
- Facilitating the introduction of Yoga in the offices / work places for the benefit of employees.
- Supporting Naturopathy for better health.
- Supporting all likeminded education and research bodies for the development of Indian Systems of Medicine.

- To provide Comprehensive Primary Healthcare through AYUSH using team-based approach
- To establish a holistic wellness model based on AYUSH principles and practices focusing on Preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative healthcare by establishing integration with existing Public healthcare system
- To provide informed choice to the needy public by making AYUSH services available.
AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres
The Ministry of AYUSH has been given the task of developing 12,500 HWCs under Ayushman Bharat.
This will be achieved in a phased manner through State Governments and Union Territories.
The funding will be through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM).
The Ministry of AYUSH, in consultation with States/UTs and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Has proposed two following models for upgradation as AYUSH Health & Wellness Centres:
- Upgradation of AYUSH dispensaries
- Upgradation of existing sub health centres (SCs)
Key Principles of HWCs
Functional integration with existing establishment for providing comprehensive care by using Standard Protocols and guidelines, up-gradation of infrastructure, community mobilization for self-care, Sensitization & capacity building of health care providers, expansion of services, inter & intrasectoral Linkages and documentation with the help of IT platform are the highlights of the activities.
Components of AYUSH services
- Preventive and promotive measures for self-care
- Medicinal plants for self-care
- Management of common ailments under 12 service delivery framework such as care in pregnancy and child birth, neonatal and infant health care, childhood and adolescent health care, family planning.
Schemes and Scholarships
1. Magaperu Sanjeevi Kit
The Tamil Nadu Government introduced “Magaperu Sanjeevi Pettagam (AMSP)” a Siddha Medicine kit on January 11, 2016 for improving the health of women during pregnancy and lactating period. It aims to increase the haemoglobin level of deficient women and general well-being of women to deliver healthy child. The objective of this scheme was reduction of maternal, infant mortality rate and improving health of women /children. In this scheme, pregnant and lactating mothers were targeted. There are four kits and each kit is distributed at the specific periods of pregnancy and (postnatal) lactation. The details of medicine and timing of distribution are as given below.
MAGAPERU SANJEEVI PETTAGAM
1. First Trimester – First kit
- Karuveppillai podi – 1 tspn twice a day after food with buttermilk.
- Maathulai manapagu – 5-10 ml twice a day after food with hotwater.
2. Second trimester – Second kit
- Annabedhi chendhooram- 1 tablet twice a day after food with water.
- Nellikai legyium – 5 gm once a day after food in the morning.
- Eladhi chooranam – 5 gm twice a day after food with water.
3. Third trimester – Third kit
- Ulundhu thailam-to apply over the abdomen before bedtime.
- Kundhirika thailam – With cottonto apply on the vagina.
Second and Third trimester - Bhavana panchangula thailam- 10 drops once a day after food at night with Hot milk.
4. Post natalperiod– Fourth kit
- Satavari legiyum – 5 gm twice a day after food with milk
- Pinda thailam- to apply over painful areas.
5. Child
- Urai Maathirai- to apply on the tongue from 7th month.

The Commissioner of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy / Member Secretary, State AYUSH Society –Tamil Nadu, Chennai has forwarded the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding, Amma Magaperu Sanjeevi Scheme being implemented to the pregnant women as discussed with the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and National Health Mission and has requested the Government to issue the necessary orders to implement the scheme successfully.
The Government after careful examination, accept the request of the Commissioner of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy / Member Secretary, State AYUSH Society – Tamil Nadu, Chennai and approve the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as in the annexure, for successful implementation of Amma Magaperu Sanjeevi Kit Medicine scheme in 1022 Siddha Wings.
2. GERIATRIC CAMP
Objective
Geriatric camps will be organized all over India in various AHWC for unique health care needs of older adults in a comprehensive and accessible manner.
- These camps data has been collected at the end of the day in two manner:
– Male/females count and photo upload
– Each Disease count
Activities Done
- To conduct health assessment of the elderly persons based on simple clinical examination relating to vision, joints, hearing, chest, Blood Pressure and other investigations including blood sugar, Haemoglobin etc. Primary Screening of each elderly patients has to be carried out as per the specially designed Screening proforma (copy enclosed) and record to be maintained.
- Proper advice on chronic ailments like Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Hypertension, etc. including dietary regulations etc. on prescription slip.
- The preventive and promotive health care services such as advocacy for adopting regular physical exercise, balanced diet, and stress management as mentioned in Ayush systems particularly in Dincharya (Daily regimen) Ritucharya ( Seasonal Care Regimen ), Sadvritta (good conduct), Yoga, and information on Adharaniya Vegas (Non-suppressible natural urges) etc. have to be provided.
- Provision of basic Lab investigations and medicines have to be ensured for the elderly people for their medical ailments.
- Referral for further investigations and treatment at Ayush dispensaries / Ayushman Arogya mandir (Ayush) / Ayush hospitals/ Ayush teaching hospitals for management of chronic and disabling diseases by judicious intervention by Panchkarma/Thokkanam Therapy/ Ilaj-bid Tadbir and Ksharasutra.
- The continuum of care of all the patients has to be ensured through referral to higher centers including Community Health Centre or the District Hospital as per need and reverse referral to first level healthcare facility.
- Data Compilation: Compilation of data received from all medical camps and referral cases to the Ayush health care facilities/ Public health facilities (CHC/DH) and forwarding the same to the State Programme Officer (Nodal Officer).
3. AYUSHMAN AROGYA SHIVIR
AIM & OBJECTIVE
To conduct health camps at all HWC (HSCs and PHCs) and a specialist medical camp at the CHCs/ BPHCs once in a month. Thus, it is requested to conduct fixed day outreach service on 3rd Saturday of every month.
KEY ACTIVITIES
- Availability of specialist services Le. Gynaecologist, Paediatrician, Surgeon, Anaesthetist, Eve specialist, ENT specialist, Dermatologist, Psychiatrist, Dental surgeon etc. (at CHC/PHC) Surgery
(Minor/Major), MTP, cataract surgeries etc. (at CHC only) - Ayushman card issuance to eligible beneficiaries
- ABHA (Health ID) creation
- RMNCAH-N services, TB screening and treatment, population enumeration and Community Based Assessment Checklist (CBAC) filling by ASHAs, screening and treatment of NCDs
- Distribution of hearing aids and spectacles
- Ayush services
- IEC and BCC and Counselling services
- Sickle cell screening and distribution of sickle cell card (in affected area only)
- IEC. BCC and Counselling services

4. SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME
Ilam Thalir Immuno Kit Medicine scheme being implemented in School Health Programme through Siddha Wings in 385 Block Primary Health Centres
The following procedures need to be followed for better implementation of the scheme and service.
- Sensitizing about the scheme among Joint Directors, Deputy Directors of Health Services, Block Medical Officers, RBSK/RKSK team. School Head Masters/Teachers also through RBSK and AYUSH team.
- AYUSH medical team needs to be provided the weekly schedule of RBSK/RKSK by the Block Medical Officer, so that Ayush doctors also can join the team for reaching the school.
- Every day one Ayush doctor shall accompany the RBSK/RKSK team to implement the IEC activities including promotions of Herbal Garden and yoga program in the school.
- The list of screened students having the health issues like memory loss, poor immunity, PCOD and anemia have to be identified so that special care can be given by issuing medicines and diet/yoga counselling.
- The list of Ayush medicines may be included in the RBSK/RKSK list for issuing to the very needy identified students, so that all IEC activities can be taken over by the AYUSH doctors to make healthy younger generation.
- AYUSH medicines have a good palatability and shall complement to the regular food and any other vitamin supplements.
- Indian medicine department will furnish the list of doctors and pharmacists to DPH and his team with location wise for taking the scheme forward.
5. ROLE OF SIDDHA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE IN COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
- Siddha system of medicine has the potential in managing and preventing the Communicable disease by dietary regimen, lifestyle changes, therapies and medicine.
- Siddha system of medicine is playing major role in preventing and treating the Communicable disease such as Dengue, chikungunya, swine flu, HIV/AIDS, COVID 19 and other outbreaks.
